Reasons for disaster
Why had the nest been attacked this year whilst it survived for two broods last year. The only
reason we can think of is the smell.

From the photo you can see the stream of black effulent from the nest hole. A fox should pick
up the smell easily. The hole had been dug right over the nest
chamber and was only about 9 inches in diameter. We suspect that having found the nest the fox
located the chamber by the sound of the babies sometime
after dawn, as the earth was freshly dug at 7 am.
