Kingfisher Disaster
2001 They nested further up the river and the season ended in disaster when it was flooded out in a
thunderstorm.
2002 They had 2 nests and raised at least 2 young possibly 4
2003 Another disaster;-
20th June 2003 - Yet again we are down by the river first thing to see if the babies are out it must
be any day now. Then we notice a pile of soil on the
grass at the top of the bank above the nest. I rush round to the other side of the brook. Our
worst fears confirmed an animal (probably the one of the
many local foxes) had dug down the 9-12 inches to the nest chamber. All the babies are dead and
all that is left are a few wing feathers almost out of
their sheathes. A few more days and they would have left the nest! Nature is so cruel.

21st June 2003 We hear the adults along the brook but do not see them at least they have survived. Maybe
they will get a second nest in.
22nd June 2003 We See one of them on the pipe. We wait hoping......
